1100 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz

San Francisco's all-gal urban old-time teardown, The Stairwell Sisters, have amassed a rowdy repertoire of timeless tunes plus a solid standing of smart, original material that is winning praise on a national level. Counter-culturalists of every generation enjoy their energetic musicianship, tight vocal arrangements and red-hot buckdancing. The gals kicked off 2007 with an appearance on the nationally syndicated A Prairie Home Companion, as well as their first UK tour, which won them rave reviews. This Fall they are recording their third CD. Stephanie Prausnitz (fiddle) and Evie Ladin (banjo/clogging) are steeped in the old-time repertoire, bringing tunes with just the right intensity to suit the quintet's dynamic feel. Lisa Berman's unique approach to the dobro adds a grit that walks a line through country and blues. Martha Hawthorne (bass) and Sue Sandlin (guitar/tiple) motor the band forward with their lock-step rhythm. All of the sisters sing, and they have a knack for infusing the old music with intoxicating energy and soul. http://www.stairwellsisters.com/

In a world dominated by the trends and logic of the market Gambetta's playing and singing stand out for their intimate emotions, communication, research in tone and humor. http://www.beppegambetta.com/

Nightingale

Friday, September 21st 8.00pm $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Over the past 15 years the three superb musicians who make up Nightingale, Becky Tracy (fiddle), Jeremiah McLane (piano, accordion), and Keith Murphy (guitar, mandolin, foot percussion, vocals), have charmed audiences with their vibrant and imaginative explorations of musical traditions that carry listeners across New England to Quebec, Newfoundland, Ireland, France, and beyond.

Hailed in Sing Out! Magazine for their "impeccable playing...danceable and exciting, with a reflective approach to the music", Nightingale has fashioned a fresh and distinctive sound that is innovative while rooted in Celtic and Northern European folk traditions. From a Newfoundland ballad to a blazing set of Irish reels, from a rollicking Quebecois chanson-a-repondre to a lilting bourree from Central France, their song and tune arrangements find the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Nightingale was one of the first groups to play for the Fiddling Cricket series, some 11 years ago. In addition to their superb concerts, they are also a top draw contra-dance band. We are very pleased to be able to get them during this West Coast tour. http://nightingalevt.org/

April Verch Band
Fiddle-playing stepdancer

Wednesday. September 26th, 7:30pm $10 adv./$12 door
21 and over only

AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

When you see twenty-seven year old April Verch perform, the first thing that strikes you is the pure energy that infuses her fiddle playing and stepdancing. When you listen to Take Me Back , her third disc for Rounder Records, though, what draws you in are more subtle things-her confident, winsome singing, the finely detailed elegance of her fiddle phrasing and the depth of a repertoire that ranges through material from Americana mainstays Buddy and Julie Miller, to simple country songs and rollicking tunes from her native Ottawa Valley to sparkling original instrumentals. Like its predecessors, Take Me Back is rooted in a deep musical tradition, yet it also serves notice that April Verch has taken a bold step forward and stands on the threshold of a new and exciting stage of her career. http://www.aprilverch.com/

Blame Sally
Americana, folk and world music
Friday, September 28th, 8.00pm $15adv/$17dr
AT THE CAYUGA VAULT

1100 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Blame Sally was formed in 2000, though they are all veteran musicians who have known each other for years. Tired of struggling to make a living individually in music, this group was intended to be just for fun - then it took off! Playing a mixture of acoustic Americana, funky folk, jazz, and world music, their first CD (live) got rave reviews and considerable airplay. Their music has been described as emotionally charged, passionate, highly melodic and compelling, and their performance schedule has taken them from San Francisco, CA to Sardinia, Italy, including performances at some of the country's finest acoustic music festivals (such as Strawberry Music Festival, Four Corners Folk Festival, Live Oak Music Festival), concert halls and listening rooms. The band members are Pam Delgado: Percussion, guitar, vocals; Renee Harcourt: Guitar, bass, banjo, harmonica, vocals; Jeri Jones: Guitar, bass, dobro, mandolin, vocals; and Monica Pasqual: piano, keys, accordion, melodica, vocals. Their specialty is intricate harmony, with all band members contributing lead vocals and strong song writing. They are equally adept with instrumentation and constantly swap around their roles on stage.

An updated version of their potent anti-war song, If You Tell a Lie, written and sung by Monica is one of the 12 tracks on their third release, Severland, the album that looks poised to bring the band the attention fans and critics have long felt they are due. To highlight the release, a music video of If You Tell a Lie has been featured on Neil Young's politically charged website, Living With War, and has risen to number two in downloads, where it has remained since Sept. 11, 2006. http://www.blamesally.com/
