CHUCK BRODSKY W/ SHERRY AUSTIN & PATTI MAXINE
Friday, July 22nd, 7:30 General Admission $25, Gold Circle $32
Not Sold Online Day of Show – Call Patty At 831.479.9421 For Availability

AT THE KUUMBWA

Chuck Brodsky is a storyteller, songwriter, troubadour, and a modern day bard. With only his acoustic guitar and his voice he’ll draw you in with genuine, down-to-earth warmth and his quirky, finely crafted songs. Using wit and irony, set to haunting melodies, he tells the stories of oddball and underdog characters through his syncopated guitar strumming or sweet finger-picking. His songs celebrate the goodness in people—the eccentric, holy, profound, courageous, inspiring, and the beautiful. They poke fun at what needs to be poked, and sometimes they challenge. They’re sworn to tell the truth.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, a very young Chuck fell in love with the piano. Despite taking lessons, he still managed to teach himself how to play. Years later, on his first day of university orientation, he saw two guys playing guitars. He soon got one of his own, transferred out of the university and into the school of life. Influenced by Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Lowell George, John Hartford, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Greg Brown, The Rolling Stones, and Nic Jones, Chuck started writing songs in a style that is very much his own, yet pays homage to the traditions

Sherry Austin and Patti Maxine make up two-fifths of the popular musical powerhouse, Sherry Austin & Henhouse. For this show, they’re venturing from the coop as a duo.
A passion for making music can thrive so secretly inside us that we don’t even realize it. The kind of passion one doesn’t have to practice yet the music grows on its own, finally insisting to find its outlet. That is just what happened for Sherry Austin. The stories and songs long tucked away have emerged fully composed in her first two CDs. She’s a natural born songwriter and singer with a recently bloomed music career. Like a rare blossom, admirers find the beautiful experience of her music well worth the wait.

Lap steel virtuoso Patti Maxine is one of the hardest working musicians in Santa Cruz, California. A session player in constant demand, Patti plays most nights of the week. A musical Swiss army knife, she handles a wide variety of styles with ease, sliding gracefully from Hawaiian to swing, from R&B and rock, from blues to jazz and back again.

The Jimmy Grant Ensemble performs primarily in the style of Django Reinhardt, infusing swing era pieces, original work, and traditional gypsy tunes with the jazz guitar pioneer's crunchy rhythms and hot harmonies.
