Richard Smith : Audiences delight, when world-renowned fingerstyle guitarist Richard Smith cuts loose. Having witnessed one of his live performances, fellow musicians and music lovers alike sing hymns of praise about world-renowned fingerstyle British guitarist Richard Smith. With fretboard fireworks and lyrical endeavors he will melt your heartstrings, make your toes tapping and your jaws hanging open. Richard's ever-growing repertoire comprises a wide variety of music from classical Bach to Beatles pop. It includes Scott Joplin Rags just like Sousa marches, Chopin, Mozart and fiddle tunes. It ranges from jazz standards to Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and to Django Reinhardt gypsy swing, not to mention his intriguing originals. He delivers both, lightning fast barn-burners and beautiful ballads. http://www.richardsmithmusic.com

Don Burnham (leader of the great California Western Swing large band, Lost Weekend), also leads the smaller ensemble, The Bolos, on vocals and rhythm guitar, with steel guitarist, Charlie Wallace (Carolyn Sills Combo and several other bands), Mark Holzinger, lead guitar and also a Lost Weekend alumni, and Karen Horner, stand-up bass and vocals. In this show, and several others in a mini-tour of the Bay Area, veteran pianist Scott Lawrence joins the group. Don and the Bolos play a mixture of classic Western Swing, some country, and Don Burnham originals. Rumor has it that local stars, Carolyn Sills and Gerard Egan may turn up and sit in.

Don has a nearly 40 year history as a troubadour, songwriter and band leader. He also worked as a Park Ranger in Yosemite in the 80's where, as "Ranger Don", he developed the musical interpretive program Songs and Tales of California and the West. With his compadres this is the fifth time over the years he has performed for Fiddling Cricket and the second for the Ugly Mug Music Series. www.donburnham.com

Dirk Hamilton - The complete singer-songwriter and musician. Veteran of 18 albums since the 70's (some on major labels). Definitely not to be pigeon-holed!

Dirk regularly plays Europe (he lives there half the time) with the four-piece Dirk Hamilton Band, where he also fronts The Bluesmen, a crack Italian group from Ferrara. The rest of the time he lives "somewhere in the US". In more intimate settings the wit and humanity of his music shine through in a way that only a solo performance can convey.

Following early success in the 70's performing and recording in California, Dirk took a hiatus and worked as a counsellor with troubled teens in group homes in Northern California in the early 80's. He returned full time to music in the late 80's, when he discovered his albums had a strong following in Italy. Following up on this he has been performing in Italy ever since and solo gigging in the US when not in Europe.

Dirk has played for us twice before at The Ugly Mug. He is currently finishing up his 19th album, a completely live "in the moment" recording (vocals, guitar, harmonica) entitled Touch and Go and will include some of the material in this show. http://www.dirkhamilton.com

Dan Frechette & Laurel Thomsen: The concert will feature songs from the best album in Dan and Laurel's career, featuring something-for-everyone songs and performances for all to enjoy. About the album: Dan Frechette and Laurel Thomsen's third studio album, Between The Rain , proves that the road warriors have truly combined their talents into a rare chemistry creating an original sound, hinting at all styles of roots music, presenting it in a polished, yet powefully raw originality. Laurel Thomsen's violin soars on these 12 compositions, weaving tapestries of emotion with unforgettable melodies, while Dan Frechette's guitar playing, pulsating magical chord progressions orchestrally throughout the 43 minute CD. Their voices blending more subtly than ever before, into a new sweet tone becoming known as the Dan and Laurel Sound. The songs venture into new territory musically, some songs both Dan and Laurel admitted to being "scared to play live" because of their complexity, while others are throwbacks to simpler times, and a nod to early rock and classic rock music. Other influences you can hear in this album are old-time, Celtic, funk and blues, classical, gypsy jazz, and jazz. www.danandlaurel.ca.

Between the two of them, Eric Thompson & David Nelson have played with nearly everyone in the Bay Area -- David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Maria Muldaur, Peter Rowan, Jody Stecher, Laurie Lewis, and many, many more. Eric has been a pillar of the Bay Area folk music scene and a founding member of the Black Mountain Boys, Blue Flame Stringband, California Cajun Orchestra, Bluegrass Intentions and, most recently, Blue Diamond Strings. David started out with Jerry Garcia in the Wildwood Boys, the Black Mountain Boys (with Eric Thompson), and moved on to found New Riders of the Purple Sage, the David Nelson Band, and worked again with Jerry in the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. He also contributed to the Grateful Dead classic recordings Workingman's Dead & American Beauty. He's also written songs with Robert Hunter. At the Grand Ol' Opry In 2006, David sang Ripple - the first Grateful Dead song ever to be performed at the Opry. Together Eric & David represent a century's worth of the best of American roots music. They are the originators of classic Americana and the giants whose shoulders the next generation of musicians will stand on. Their duets shows are a delightful blend of musical and verbal interplay. www.nelsonband.com and www.ericandsuzy.com
