Cahalen Morrison & County Hammer
Think George Jones meets Motown & The Band at a Honky-Tonk
Monday, June 8th, 7.30pm $10/$10
Over 21 Only
FC Cosponsored Show
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL
6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, Reservations online or call 831-603-2294

Country Hammer is the collaboration of three lead singers and writers, each bringing their unique take on American music, backed by a group of incredible instrumentalists. Their songs, nearly all original, touch the full range of emotions. One minute they can silence a rowdy roadside honky-tonk, inducing tears in beers, and the next they can burn the place down. Drawing on the sensibilities of everything from The Band to George Jones, and from Motown to Norteño, Country Hammer knows no boundaries, but it's country just the same. They deliver lonesome heartbreak and the best two stepping around! Their new CD The Flower of Muscle Shoals swings through graceful arrangements of guitars, pedal steel, fiddle, bass and percussion, with a rich texture and genuine approach that is sure to rouse any fan of country and old-time music. www.cahalen.com/country-hammer/

Nearly Beloved, are, for this evening, Matt Lax (a.k.a Lacques), guitars and lead vocals, Erik Pearson, guitar, banjo and vocals, and Michael Stadler (fiddle, mandolin, guitar and vocals). At larger shows they add bass and drums. Matt also plays with the West African style band The Palm Wine Boys. Erik has an encyclopedic knowledge of old time banjo, and is best known for playing with The Crooked Jades. Michael is an ace multi-instrumentalist and a vocalist and song writer in many genres, who often performs as a soloist. It’s a very tight instrumental group!

Matt is actually a local Aptos boy who moved to the Austin scene in the early 80’s, returned to California (SF) in the late 80’s, where he immersed himself in the African music scene there for many years (a member of and writer for Zulu Spear for 10 years). When not writing and playing he teaches at SF Juvenile Hall. In tonight’s show the band will be presenting material from “This House of Mine”, a mellow folk/country set of originals, and Matt’s 5th CD. www.nearlybeloved.com

Chuck Brodsky said “if you ever get a chance to book this guy – do it! He is as good as it gets!” So I did, and again, and again! He returns to the Ugly Mug for another intimate show…one guitar, one voice, non-stop for 45 minutes, and then again for another 45.

Jack’s bio in itself is amazing, with a 55 year career playing folk, rock jazz, R and B, classical and popular music from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. In the 60’s he was a hired gun guitarist/ band leader for John Lee Hooker, Hank Ballard, and the Shirelles, amongst others. Up to the 80’s he played jazz trumpet and classical guitar, while also fronting a series of original rock bands as an electric guitarist. Since the 60’s he has also toured as a solo troubadour. His songs have been recorded by others ranging from Tom Jones to Tom Paxton. At times he has teamed up with other great singers – the late Harry Nilsson in 1973 and until 2002 with his friend, the late Mickey Newberry. Jack has at least 9 solo CD’s of original music, plus involvement in many others. www.jackwilliamsmusic.com

a musical style that’s equal parts folk storytelling and Tin Pan Alley songcraft, delivered with the impassioned soul of an old blues singer" - Kevin Oliver, No Depression Magazine.

".... his artistry... is nothing short of amazing. Dazzling picking, expressive voice, unique and interesting songs. He is a showman in the best sense of the word and just wowed our audience. I think they would have followed him anywhere." - Rich Warren, WFMT "Midnight Special", Chicago IL
