Bill Kirchen, songwriter and Commander Cody guitar ace (Hot Rod Lincoln, Too Much Fun) talks about this special evening of Songs & Stories: “Steel guitarist Bobby Black's career spans an extraordinary 7 decades. He played on the very first George Jones sessions and shared the stage with Hank Williams I and II. Against all odds, in 1972 Bobby joined and became the musical adult supervision with Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. Since then he's played with a who's who of musical icons including Merle and Willie, the Wheel and Sir Doug. Bill started a couple decades later, but has his own eye-popping stories from days with the Commander, Gene Vincent, Hoyt Axton, Elvis Costello and more. Hear first-hand tales of two lives rich in music and select songs from two master guitarists. http://www.billkirchen.com  www.vintageguitar.com/12628/bobby-black/

As Bill puts it - "...my pal Bobby is the last of a breed, a wonderful story teller and perhaps the most sublime musician I have ever known.

Canada’s Kenny Butterill, also a part-time resident of Santa Cruz, is back in town and will be giving this concert, with his Santa Cruz based band, before going off to Europe for a summer tour in support of his recently released CD, “Troubadour Tales”. It was 10 years in the making, being recorded in several studios with over 20 distinguished guests, including Donovan, Cindy Cashdollar, and Ray Bonneville.

Sometimes compared to Gordon Lightfoot, JJ Cale and John Prine, Butterill’s rustic, minimalist music is richly textured but never over-produced. Butterill’s live shows have a warm ambience with an up-close personal vibe that match the cool feel and groove of his albums. His band includes Dave Davis on guitar, Bob Carter on harmonica and mandolin, Leroy Hoornbeck on bass and Eric Gunn on percussion.

"There is a time in every artist's career when they are at the top of their game. For Kenny Butterill that time is now!" Brent Jeffries, The Sun Times, Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada.

Front Country :  Formed in 2011 as a collective of the Bay Area's finest young acoustic talent, Adam Roszkiewicz, Jacob Groopman, Jordan Klein, Leif Karlstrom, Melody Walker and Zach Sharpe joined forces to play a monthly gig with friends in San Francisco's Mission District. They quickly found a musical rapport that was open to challenging arrangements, unique covers and original songwriting. Since then they have continued to expand their repertoire and push the boundaries of bluegrass on the national scene. In 2012 they won the Rockygrass band competition in Colorado and followed up in 2013 with a win at Telluride becoming the third band in history to win both contests. Also in 2013 lead singer Melody Walker won the Chris Austin Songwriting competition at Merlefest and mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz was nominated for Grammy for his work with the Modern Mandolin Quartet on their album "Americana". www.frontcountryband.com

Whiskey poets & angels, cowgirls & bluebirds, Corrine West's characters, chart the tides, test the winds, and weather severe storms; all given life by her compelling stage-presence and luscious voice. West's deep Americana sound, informed by nomadic-roads traveled, continues to radiate her respected reputation within the global acoustic-roots music-scene. The songs on West's latest recording came about after a year-long sabbatical in Austria, which culminated in the new disc. “Starlight Highway is my first completely self-produced record,” West says about the sessions. “I wanted to create a body of songs that moved my music forward in new directions, while paying tribute to the music I have done in the past. This influenced my decisions regarding the instrumentation; piano, organ, acoustic rock angles, heavy harmonies, the deep-drive of drums, the laid back floating ballads-- I wanted to play with many flavors, and I didn't hold back on using any spices while in the sonic kitchen.” http://www.corinnewest.com
