Bubbeleh plus Marc Atksinson Trio
Jewish Shark Attack meets Sizzling Gypsy Jazz

21 and over

FC Cosponsored Show

Bubbeleh fearlessly (and shamelessly) invents intersections between traditional Jewish folk music and whatever else they want--mixing bulgars and horas with blistering odd meter grooves and improvisation. A motley group of nice Jewish(ish) kids that are your nana's worst nightmare. Freddy Kruger with Payos--a.k.a The Jewish Shark Attack.http://www.jewishsharkattack.com

Marc Atksinson Trio: Marc Atkinson is one of Canada's finest JUNO-nominated, Western Canadian award-winning musicians. He is the leader and composer of the internationally renowned Marc Atkinson Trio (and co-founder, composer and performer in the acclaimed, The Bills). The music of this virtuosic group is melodically captivating, sensually charged and ferociously, technically awe-inspiring. http://www.marcatkinson.com

Carolyn Sills moved to Santa Cruz from New York a few years ago. The Big Apple’s loss is definitely our gain! In NY she played with country/rockabilly outfits and sang jazz with the likes of Les Paul. Here Santa Cruz immediately took Carolyn to its heart, whether in her Patsy Cline tribute shows, or recreating the sultry torch vocals of the 40’s and 50’s, or in her Santa is Real Christmas spectacular shows at Don Quixote’s.

It’s an honor to have her and her red hot quartet (Gerard Egan, guitar; Charlie Wallace, lap steel; Jerry Logan, bass) play in our Wednesday Acoustic series at the Mug, where they will play material from their new CD …all originals, together with a mix of standards, country, and swing covers. www.carolynsills.com

……her vocals resonate with a throaty anguish, torch songs straight from the heart…conjures up a misty past of dim juke joints and neon lit roadhouses…. The effect is mesmerizing" - Michael Dregni, Vintage Guitar Magazine

James Hurley, performing songwriter at large, has been named as one of LA's top 10 live singer-songwriters (Folkworks). He plays an elegant jazzy guitar style and delivers a seductive blend of jazzy pop-folk with intelligent lyrics and a smooth voice, reflecting the life he lives. They vary from wicked humor to stark poignancy. He has 3 self-produced CDs, the latest being Tempest in a Teacup, recorded while on tour from Arizona to Washington wherever he could find studio space. James has played for us twice before and we are pleased to have him return to our stage. www.jameshurleymusic.com

After a fast-paced life doing voice-overs, post-production work and playing music in Hollywood, Derek Bodkin traded it all in five years ago to chase the dream of living in Santa Cruz. "Maybe I needed to learn to be free," he says. The guitarist, banjo player, singer and whistler felt hemmed in by the strictures of his music education that emphasized the rules. Bodkin had held back on composing his own music, but his Santa Cruz life has opened the floodgates for him. https://www.facebook.com/derekbodkin?fref=ts

Front Country plus The Blackberry Bushes Stringband
Rippin' West Coast Progressive Bluegrass

Front Country: After their RockyGrass band competition win in 2012, and a win at Telluride this year, Front Country is in the midst of a busy year with festivals RockyGrass, Pagosa Folk n' Bluegrass, and the CBA Father's Day Fest, and ready for an even bigger summer of 2014. Front Country released their first EP, This is Front Country, in February at the Great American Music Hall in their hometown of San Francisco, California. They are made up of some of the Bay Area's finest young acoustic talent, Adam Roszkiewicz, Jacob Groopman, Jordan Klein, Leif Karlstrom, Melody Walker and Zach Sharpe.http://www.frontcountryband.com

The Blackberry Bushes are a bluegrass trio who draw from the deep roots of American traditional music to create a playful and resonant sound with both twang and sophistication. Joyful singing and enchanting songwriting are supported by carefully constructed soundscapes that feature virtuosic fiddle and bowed bass. It is a rare magic that allows them to artfully fuse sounds from many genres into a string instrumentation that retains distinct threads of sonic color. This is a daredevil sound that is delicate, bold, and like their thorny namesake, rooted and growing, growing, growing." http://www.facebook.com/theblackberrybushes
