Goh Kurosawa, from LA, is increasingly becoming recognized for his dynamic compositions and performances on acoustic, classical, electric and sitar instruments. He covers many genres and is sometimes referred to as a musical "wakonyosai" - an approach to Western knowledge with Japanese spirit. In 2009 his composition, Hitori, was one of half a million works, from 163 countries, submitted to the Just Plain Folks Awards in Nashville, where it placed in the top 6 in the solo guitar category. He has toured many parts of the world and, with his 24 string bass playing brother Kai, performed for us in 2010. This time he comes solo. www.happysad.org/goh

"…masterful use of dynamics, ranging from quite melodic passages to controlled explosions" -Live Music Alliance
"A cavalcade of string versatility from Flamenco to electric rave-up!" -Downbeat Magazine

Doug Adamz, from Texas, now resident in Marin, is a masterful guitarist (not to mention harmonica, fiddle and vocals), with a terrific sense of humor. He has two solo albums, Guitar Solos, a collection of original pieces for solo guitar, and Bernardo's Seranade, a collection of original songs, as well as taking part in an amazing array of other projects, including composing for the Kronos Quartet and playing (fiddle) for President George W. Bush in Palo Alto (we won't hold that against him).

"Doug is a tremendous singer, songwriter, guitarist, fiddler and harmonacist. Don't utterly ruin your lives by missing Doug Adamz, Friends" -Stevie Coyle

Matt Lax (nee Lacques), guitar, mandolin, vocals, was a member of the Aptos High Jazz Band when it won the Big Band State Championship and played at the Montreux Jazz Festival. After stints in Austin and LA he settled in SF in 1983, joining the African music scene, playing with Zulu Spear for 10 years. Around 1991 he rediscovered the country, folk, swing and roots music now known as Americana, eventually forming Matt Lax and Nearly Beloved. They have played the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, and countless Bay Area venues, and are just releasing their third CD, Where's Bob, which has been described as "roots music for malcontents" by one reviewer. Matt also plays with the West African music band, the Palm Wine Boys, and teaches at SF Juvenile Hall. The rest of Nearly Beloved, for this performance are Michael Stadler, a formidable singer-songwriter and instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo) in his own right, bass man Paul Oguin, who played the very first show in our series (Chojo Jacques Trio), and guest Jonathan Dryden on accordion. http://www.nearlybeloved.com/home.html

"Was that you playing those wild guitar licks up there?" - John Lee Hooker to Matt at JJ's Club, San Jose, 1991

The members of the group include Pam Delgado (percussion and vocals), Renee Harcourt (guitar, bass and vocals), Jeri Jones (guitar, bass and vocals) and Monica Pasqual (piano, accordion and vocals). The group was formed in 2000, and in 2001, KFOG "began playing the band's music on the popular 'Acoustic Sunrise' show, leading to more gigs and bigger venues"; the band "got national attention through XM Radio and by the end of 2006, the band was playing more than 50 shows a year."

Girlyman plus Adrianne
Leading Edge Three-Part Harmony Folk-Pop
Wednesday, March 14th, 7.30pm $15/$15
<21 w/parent

FC Cosponsored Show with
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

After Girlyman's first gig they earned enough to buy a milkshake. Now they sell out The Barns at Wolftrap, The Old Town School of Folk Music, and The Freight and Salvage. The venues have gotten more famous, but filling the seats is just part of the story of Girlyman's connection to their audience. Fans drive hundreds of miles to hear their three-part harmonies. If they live overseas, they make a special trip to America. If they bring friends, the newcomers leave hooked. The Village Voice calls Girlyman “really good, really unexpected, and really different.” When a rabbinical student writes a prayer based on their music, that's really unexpected. When a fan tattoos their lyrics on her feet, that's really different. The band's blend of acoustic, Americana and rock winds its way into your life. Indy folk rocker Adrianne opens. http://girlyman.com

Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore
Outstanding vocalist in any style; exquisite guitar accompaniment!
Friday, March 16th, 8.00pm $20/$22
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Mollie O'Brien, who grew up in West Virginia, is known for her early career as a jazz singer in New York, her folk and country collaborations with brother, Tim O'Brien, solo work in the areas of bluegrass, folk and country, gospel, old-time and traditional southern mountain music, and with her blues band in Colorado, where she moved in the 80's. She does not play an instrument and she does not write songs, she is simply a vocalist par excellence.

She has been called one of roots music's best interpreters and singers, and her voice described as "smooth," "smoky," "powerful," and "bright and bold as sheet lightning." Once you've heard it, you're hooked. She moves without hesitation from style to style, dipping into the songs of Lennon and McCartney, Percy Mayfield, Memphis Minnie, Chuck Berry, the Subdudes, Richard Thompson, and more. Mollie has earned rave notices at major festivals and venues throughout the U.S. and in the United Kingdom, Europe, and South America. Her class and versatility earned her a long-time slot in Prairie Home Companion's Hopeful Gospel Quartet. Her great strength is her voice and the classy and wide selection of material, she chooses. These days she tours with guitarist husband, Rich Moore, and they pick and choose their material as they want, the rest of the world be damned, as exemplified in their recent duo CD, Saints and Sinners. Rich is an exquisite guitarist, who also writes his own material and has an excellent solo guitar CD, Steady State, to his name.

Mollie has played twice before for Fiddling Cricket, 6 years ago, and 12 years ago. It's taken this long to get her to come back and grace our stage again. We are ecstatic she is able to do so! http://www.mollieobrien.com/

"….Mollie O'Brien has one of the best voices in the business, and she really lets it loose…" - Tom Paxton

Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit
plus Tater Famine
Friday, March 23rd, 8.00pm $10/$10
21 and over

FC Cosponsored Show with
AT DON QUIXOTES MUSIC HALL

6275 Highway 9 in Downtown Felton, call 831-603-2294

Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit: Take two Americana singer-songwriters, an indie-rock veteran of a drummer, country-born bassist, and metal-bred pedal steel player, and what do you get: the rough-hewn yet driftwood-smooth; rebel-headed, but heart-of-gold sound of The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. The outfit includes singer-songwriters Chris Doud and Will Taylor, bassist Taylor Webster, drummer Aaron Burtch, and master of all lead instruments, Matt Cordano. Any Outfit member may tell you that it's plenty just to be at the pinnacle of a local music scene embracing roots and Americana music, but, as one recent convert put it, “the rest of America needs to hear this noise.” Likened to anything from Old Crow Medicine Show and The Avett Bros. to Asleep at the Wheel, Bob Wills and even Neil Young (depending on which live set you happen to catch) they most often defy categorization, usually settling for some hybrid of Americana, folk, rock, bluegrass, and that sweet, old country & western. They describe their efforts as trying to make good, honest, insightful music, that's not afraid of a good time and a little fun, that people will move their feet to, and that also goes real well with a straight road and a long drive. http://www.reverbnation.com/tgltso

Tater Famine: Simply put, they rock. Tater Famine is a Four-piece acoustic band. The core instruments are acoustic guitars, mandolin, stand-up bass and drums. www.myspace.com/taterfamine

Evie Ladin is known primarily as the clawhammer banjo player, vocalist, clog dancer and driving force behind San Francisco's very popular all-gal teardown old-time group, The Stairwell Sisters. The Evie Ladin Band, is a "quieter and gentler" (sometimes!) string ensemble (Dina Maccabee, violin; Erik Pearson, guitar and dobro; Keith Terry, bass and percussion), allowing Evie to be out front with interpretations of old and new music in the old-time, traditional folk, country, and contemporary veins, including much of her own strong songwriting. Her solo CD, Float Downstream, released in 2010 is a beautiful and beautifully produced piece of work with its soulful, rhythmic, old-time sound. In this concert Evie will feature material from the CD and from her contributions to the Stairwell Sisters repertoire. She will also have her dancing mat with her and in addition to clogging there will be some incredible body percussion from Keith ("the human hambone") and Evie. http://www.evieladin.com/

"A voice that draws you in, a groove on the banjo that just won't quit" - Mike Marshall
"Evie Ladin is a natural entertainer with a gift for infusing folk practices with contemporary verve" - S. F. Chronicle

The Juncos are an exciting young group from Santa Cruz with a stylistic mix incorporating elements of folk, alt-country, jug band, honky-tonk, rockabilly, and old-time. Joshua Lowe (guitar and banjo) is the lead vocalist and songwriter, Jeff Kissell plays double bass and harmonizes, Sometimes there are additional members on fiddle, mandolin, and lap steel. They have a very fine debut CD, At the Feet of Old Bristlecone. www.thejuncos.com
