Suzy Thompson in a very rare solo show - award-winning fiddler, accomplished guitarist and powerful singer, she's explored all kinds of Southern roots music, from pre-war blues and jug band music to Cajun and Creole to bluegrass and old-time. She loves to rework older material with new instrumentation, borrowing freely from all the "true vine" styles, creating new music based on older traditions. You may know her from her work with Any Old Time, Geoff Muldaur & the Texas Sheiks, Del Rey, the California Cajun Orchestra, the Bluegrass Intentions, Blue Flame String Band , and of course her duet with her husband Eric Thompson. She's also performed and/or recorded with many other roots music luminaries.

In this solo show, you'll hear Suzy play music from her 2 solo albums and beyond: hip-shaking blues rarities from classic 1920s shouters like Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie and Ma Rainey; cinematic ballads from Kentucky and North Carolina; blazing fiddle solos using odd tunings and timings; and good-time jug band ragtime songs like "Under the Chicken Tree". www.ericandsuzy.com

The Juncos are an exciting young group from Santa Cruz with a stylistic mix incorporating elements of folk, alt-country, jug band, honky-tonk, rockabilly, and old-time. Joshua Lowe (guitar and banjo) is the lead vocalist and songwriter, Jeff Kissell plays double bass and harmonizes, Sometimes there are additional members on fiddle, mandolin, and lap steel. They have a very fine debut CD, "At the Feet of Old Bristlecone". www.thejuncos.com

Tony Marcus, who was a member of both Cats & Jammers and The Cheap Suit Serenaders, two groups popular in the Santa Cruz area for many years in the distant past, and his partner, Patrice Haan, team up as Leftover Dreams, presenting material from the Great American Songbook - standards (Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, etc.) and more arcane material - presented with superb harmony and burnished accompaniment.. Patrice delivers intimate lyrics in a sultry and seductive "velvety alto-tenor" (Kerry Parker, Folknic) and Tony's voice has been described as "the definition of mellifluous" (Derk Richardson, The Express). Tony plays guitar with style and grace, and may also bring out his fiddle. The combination creates an intriguing mix of moody ballads, jumping swingers, and romantic love songs - mostly from bygone days, but with the occasional quirky original thrown in, plus much witty banter. Join us for a relaxed evening of unerring good taste.

While the music was every bit what we had hoped for, there was just so much more to the performance. The chemistry between you two made for one of the most romantic musical experiences we have ever encountered. -Roger & Donna Brinton, Redwood City
