Both are gifted songwriters, and their voices blend and intertwine as only brothers can. Eliza James provides harmony vocals and some additional lead vocals.

Preston Reed
Spectacular Solo Guitarist
Friday, October 14th, 8.00pm $20/$22
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Preston Reed never lets his extraordinary technique overshadow the beauty of his music, but he attacks the entire instrument in a never-ending search for the orchestra he knows is lurking inside. At full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands at once suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work.

Drawing on blues, rock, funk and jazz influences among others, Preston Reed's range of explosively original music will probably change your expectations of a guitarist. The phrase 'has to be seen to be believed" has never been more true! He invented his style of playing in the mid 80's and, since then, it has been adopted by several hotshots amongst a new generation of guitarists. Preston has 15 albums to his credit so far. www.facebook.com/Preston.T.Reed www.facebook.com/prestonreedmusic

Fishtank Ensemble are the leaders in high-energy, cross-pollinated gypsy music. They bring their unique blend of Romanian, Gypsy jazz, Flamenco, Balkan, Turkish and Tango influenced music to the world. The dynamic, virtuosic, fiery that comprises Fishtank Ensemble take their roots both from their own varied musical and national backgrounds, as well as from their adventures and travels. The singer Ursula sang opera on the streets and town squares of Italy, until she found a love of gypsy music; their French violinist voyaged around all of Europe in a handmade mule-drawn caravan for ten years, collecting music and experiences. Their Serbian bass player has spent time playing with gypsies as well as some of the rock and roll's legends, and aptly defends his reputation as the best slap bass player in the world and the guitarist is a master of flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar who honed his craft in the gypsy caves of Granada, Spain. Whatever wild time you can expect from this band, it will never match their out of this world performance. http://www.fishtankensemble.com

Druha Trava
Bluegrass, Newgrass, Folk, and Traditional - from the Czech Republic
10th visit to the Fiddling Cricket Concert series!

Friday, October 28th, 8.00pm $20/$22
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

A virtuoso instrumental group with a charismatic lead singer, Druha Trava perform acoustic music with strong bluegrass, folk, rock, and jazz influences. They use a basically bluegrass line-up of guitar, dobro, bass, mandolin and banjo, though you will see the banjo player pick up a clarinet and Irish whistles. You will also hear them playing Bob Dylan and possibly the overture from Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride transcribed for guitar and banjo!

Robert Krestan (lead vocals, mandolin, guitar) and Lubos Malina (banjo, vocals, clarinet, whistles) founded the group in 1991 after years in a famous Czech folk group, Poutnici.

Lubos, originally a classical clarinet player, has often been voted best Czech banjo player, and has a decidedly Bela Fleck style. Lubos Novotny is a virtuoso dobro player who crosses musical boundaries and has often been Czech dobro player of the year. Emil Formanek, from the Slovak Republic, joined the group as lead guitarist in 2004, having formerly been with the bluegrass band Fragment. Thomas Liska, well-known bassist on the European jazz scene, is the most recent member, having joined the band two years ago. He keeps the beat for Druha Trava. http://www.druhatrava.com/

DT gained additional renown two year's ago, when they were chosen to play at Prague Castle for President Obama's visit there in April. NPR covered the show and raved about their versions of Dylan songs from the groups 2007 Dylanovsky CD.

Border Radio

Border Radio, from Southern California, has a style that moves from a hard-driving string band sound, to ballads, to toe-tapping swing. Kelly McClune ( lead vocals, guitar, accordion) and Mike Stromberg (dobro, guitar, vocals), were the original duo founders in 2000, and John Lambdin (fiddle, mandolin) and Robert Staron (upright bass) have joined since. Kelly and Mike write much of the band's material and Kelly's okie roots and Patsie Cline styled torch vocals combine with the band's California country tinged feel to provide their signature sound. They have 4 CDs out so far. www.borderradio-music.com

Druha Trava is a wonderfully individual band from the Czech Republic that is hard to describe. They perform new acoustic world music with bluegrass influences. You might hear them perform a bluegrass tune, Bob Dylan tune or one by another American or British artist, or one of their many originals. Though they basically use a typical bluegrass complement of instruments, you might see the banjo player also pick up a clarinet or Irish whistle. This along with the versatility of the dobro player helps create much of their unique sound. www.druhatrava.com
