Stevie Coyle was a co-founder of the Waybacks, fronting for them as songwriter and vocalist as well as providing rhythm and fingerstyle guitar. Last year he left the band to go solo and released the concept album Ten-in-One. He previewed the material from the album in a Fiddling Cricket concert in May, backed by a full band. Since then he has been touring extensively in support of the CD and will be visiting the UK, where he is currently getting great reviews from all the major music magazines. Several pieces from the CD are also being considered for play in movies and TV.

We are delighted to have Stevie take time out of his busy schedule and return to us for a solo show at Mission City Coffee. http://www.steviecoyle.com/

In the 70's and 80's she released several wonderful recordings incorporating originals, standards, and popular songs, set to her guitar and banjo arrangements, which influenced a generation of singer-songwiters. A long time resident of Santa Cruz, she has just completed a national tour. Steve Palazzo has also been a stalwart of the Santa Cruz music scene for over 20 years, being one of the first employees of Santa Cruz Guitars; the lead guitarist, and a vocalist, for the bluegrass band, Homefire; the guitar accompanist of choice to many singers; and a guitar teacher to 100's. Sandy Frye is a graphic designer by trade (she has designed the CD covers for many local artists) and a singer-songwriter who has been honing her craft for many years in the Santa Cruz area. With material ranging from light humor to soulful ballads (plus eclectic covers) she has become a house concert and backyard favorite. Sandy feels strongly about supporting live acoustic music, having started and run a series in Portland, Oregon, in the past, and also at The Attic in downtown SC. Together with Marky Starks and Dick Brundle she started this Ugly Mug series. In this show she will be accompanied by Celine Gutierrez.

Joe Tomaselli got his first guitar the same week that Elvis appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. He has been playing and writing songs ever since. His family and the mountains are what shaped his life. His music has been described as being someplace between Woodstock and the Cowboy Way. His songs are about the people and places that make up life in a small town. Notable players such as Corrine West and Kelly Joe Phelps have been covering his tunes for years, thus sharing the joy of down to earth, toe tapping, Joe Tomaselli songs. Once a Santa Cruz local himself, he makes a rare appearance from Taylorsville, CA to be with us tonight.

Can the members of Girlyman read each other's minds? Sometimes it seems so. Onstage they often finish one another's sentences or burst into improvised three-part ditties so tight they seem rehearsed. Truth is, the Atlanta-based trio has had years to develop this rapport. Doris Muramatsu and Tylan Greenstein became best friends in second grade. The two met Nate Borofsky in college at a talent show, and since then they've been creating their own unique language of three-part harmony. Informed by 60s vocal groups like Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas and the Papas, and infused with years of classical and jazz training, Girlyman's songs are a dance of melody and suspensions - an irresistible blend of acoustic, Americana , and rock The Village Voice calls "really good, really unexpected, and really different." Everything's Easy, Girlyman's fourth studio album, is the band's most intimate and sophisticated effort.www.girlyman.com.

Rick Shea and Tom Corbett
The Best of California Music: Folk, Country, Swing, Bluegrass, Blues and More!
Friday, April 30th, 8.00pm, $15/$17
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050
call 831-475-4938 or email Brundle@attglobal.net

Rick Shea is a deeply evocative singer and a formidable acoustic and electric guitarist. He grew up where the urban sprawl of East LA met the desert of San Bernadino, and, right out of high school, became immersed in both the coffee house folk and the country scenes of that time (1978) and place, playing 7 nights a week as a sideman and singer. Since then he has worked as a multi-instrumental sideman with several well-known groups, most notably touring with, and opening for, Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men for 6 years. Parallel to this he has developed a successful solo career, covering a wide range of styles from hard country to traditional folk, all with equal ease and confidence, as demonstrated on his second, just released, solo CD, Shelter Valley Blues. http://www.rickshea.net/

"Staunchly independent - represents the best of California music" - LA Weekly

Tom Corbett, from Santa Barbara, was know for years as a virtuoso mandolin sideman and band member - particularly in Phil Salazar's Acousticats and John McEuan's String Wizards. More recently he has started performing solo, and with his own band, singing and playing mandolin, guitar, and banjo, and covering bluegrass, swing, country, folk, and even blues and reggae. He has two solo CD's and appears on many others.http://www.tomcorbett.net/index.html#

In this concert Rick and Tom will each take one set, backed by the other performer.
