Red House Records recording artist, Ray Bonneville, is a singer-songwriter with a percussive blues guitar style that creates a powerful groove and makes a rhythm section redundant. His almost antique arch-top guitar and footboard percussion are augmented by smoky vocals mixed with outstanding rack harmonica playing (he started life as a blues harp player and added guitar later). His unique, roots influenced, country blues material and riveting performance style capture new fans wherever he goes. Ray has played all over the continent for 30 years, with "home" being Quebec (where he was born), Boston, New Orleans, Colorado, Seattle, Alaska (where he was also a bush pilot), and for the last twelve years, Montreal. Now he has just moved to Austin, Texas. A citizen of both Canada and the US, and bilingual, he is also well-known on the European circuit, particularly in France. Ray has 5 solo CD's to his credit and appears on many others. His 3rd CD, Gust of Wind, won a 1999 Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy). His 4th, Rough Luck captures his work undiluted - live, one man, no overdubs. His 5th, Roll on Down was released two years ago and his 6th, Goin'on Feel is in the works.http://www.raybonneville.com/

"...a potent blues cocktail reminiscent of John Lee Hooker and JJ Cale, leavened with Clapton and Dire Straits styled guitar work." - Folk Roots Magazine

"The key to Bonneville's music is the groove he finds and rides in each song." - Montreal Gazette

Tom Lewis
Songs and Stories of the Sea, British traditional music, original material.
Friday, November 9th, 8.00pm $15 adv./$17 door
AT MISSION CITY COFFEE ROASTING CO.

2221 The Alameda, Santa Clara, CA 95050

This veteran of the British Navy (submarine division) performs his and others' songs of the sea, tall ships, underwater hulks, war, politics and humor with an unmatched ability for unaccompanied solo singing. This is combined with a deep knowledge of the material and its history and a dynamic and engaging performance style. He can switch in a moment from the hilarity of unfathomable navy rules and regulations to the pathos of war, death, and hardships of the sea. A native of Northern Ireland and a long-time resident of Canada, Tom Lewis is a regular performer at major traditional, folk and sea shanty festivals, where, in addition to his unaccompanied singing, he also plays squeezebox and the uke. Tom has 6 solo CDs to his credit.http://tomlewis.net/

As winner of the inaugural "Trophée Stan Hugill", French fans dubbed Tom "The Springsteen of Sea Chanteys".

Old Songs Festival (Altamont NY) declares "This man knows the sea ... from the bottom up!".

Living Tradition (UK) says "Although I always knew he was good, I was not quite prepared for HOW good.".

Chojo Jacques and Billy Bright
Mandolin Duets, Fiddle and Mandolin Duets

Wayne "Chojo" Jacques is known to most as a founder member and the fiddle/mandolin maestro of The Waybacks, and more recently as the fiddle and mandolin player with Houston Jones and Chojo Jacques and Friends. His roots are in Texas, but much of his 35 years of playing experience (in every kind of music from traditional fiddling to rock and blues) has been in the north-west and the Bay Area.

Billy Bright attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Bostonin the 90's and soon after began touring with Peter Rowan as mandolinist in Peter's "Texas Trio". Later he became a permanent member of The Peter Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet. His acoustic reputation has drawn the likes of David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Tony Trischka, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Yonder Mountain String Band and others to record and/or perform with him.

Billy and Chojo first met at a festival in Florida in 2001, where they were performing with their respective bands. They shared late night motel jams and gigs over the next few years. Their similar tastes for mandolin and fiddle music, as well as their complementary playing styles, create a powerful presentation of American roots and traditional string music and they have a nearly finished a CD demonstrating this. http://www.chojo.net/
