Bill Evans
"The Banjo in America" Concert
Saturday, January 7th, 8pm $15

AT THE ESPRESSO GARDEN AND CAFE

"The Banjo in America" spotlights over 250 years of American banjo music performed on five historical and historical replica instruments. Ranging from a slave gourd banjo, to a 19th century minstrel banjo, an 1890's Cole Eclipse and a prewar flathead Gibson Mastertone, Bill Evans performs African music from the 1780's, mid-19th century minstrelsy, classic and ragtime music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and 20th century folk and bluegrass styles, along with healthy doses of his own original compositions. Tim Bond of Bluegrass Now magazine writes of Bill's work "he is able to reach into the banjo's past to make a sublime statement of its future…to create a sound firmly rooted in tradition but still fresh and vital."

Bill intersperses historical information and humorous historical quotes from such diverse figures as Mark Twain and Steve Martin to help trace the banjo's history from its African roots to an instrument of the late 19th century middle class Victorian parlor to an instrument associated with 20th century folk and bluegrass music. "The Banjo in America" informs while it entertains, exposing audiences to 250 years of American music and the startlingly rich history of America's favorite instrument. Bill has performed "The Banjo in America" all over the world, including residencies at the Shoin Women's University in Kobe, Japan; Richmond Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and Western Washington University in Bellingham, among others. Bill is well known to Bay Area audiences from his performances with the Bluegrass Intentions and Due West. www.nativeandfine.com

Keith Greeninger and Friends
Singer-Songwriter; Good-Time Party Band
Friday, January 13th, 8pm. $15

AT THE ESPRESSO GARDEN AND CAFE

Keith Greeninger is a fourth generation Californian who has lived and traveled in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Central America - all while learning how to craft simple, honest and heartfelt songs, and to develop a deft and aggressive acoustic guitar style. When he returned to Santa Cruz he co-founded the trio, City Folk, an immensely popular group on the folk circuit. In a 6 years span they recorded 3 albums and also won KFOG's Best of the Bay Music Award.

Since that time Keith has pursued both a solo career and collaborated with the Santa Cruz band, Water, releasing several CDs, including his first solo CD, Wind River Crossing. In 1997 he won the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival New Songwriters Award. Last year he won the equally prestigious TellurideTroubadour national songwriting contest. Keith paints intricate portraits of the human condition with good tunes and strong vocals. In this show, in addition to playing solo, he will also be backed by band friends with a wide variety of instruments, a setting in which the music can morph instantly from sensitive singer-songwriter into good-time party folk-rock. www.keithgreeninger.com

AT THE ESPRESSO GARDEN AND CAFE

Chuck Brodsky is a musical storyteller who combines barb-witted social commentary with underlying humanity, compassion and humor. His songwriting on the one hand pokes fun at political corruption, small-town meanness, religion and our laughable culture, and on the other, contains poignant vignettes, in vividly rendered stories, of old, unknown, and unsung heroes. Originally from Philadelphia, Chuck was resident here a few years back, but now lives in the mountains of North Carolina, where some of his songs are set. He has 5 solo CDs out - all critically acclaimed. The first 3 were on Rounder Records. The 4th, Baseball Ballads, has led to him performing 3 times at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
